Academics

Promotion Requirements (per Student Handbook):

All middle school students are expected to earn a diploma from Hilmar Middle School and to participate in promotion ceremonies at the completion of their eighth grade year. It is important that parents and students understand Hilmar Middle School’s promotion requirements. Students earn a diploma and receive the privilege to participate in the 8th grade promotion ceremony by meeting the academic, attendance, and behavior requirements outlined below:

1. A student must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.00 (“C” average) during their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years.

2. A student must not have excessive absences, whether excused or unexcused, during their 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years combined to participate in promotion ceremonies.

3. A student must have demonstrated a willingness to behave appropriately in order to participate in promotion ceremonies.

Promotion means that students have demonstrated that they are ready for high school and should, with the proper effort, be able to earn a high school diploma.

Students who transfer to Hilmar Middle School shall, upon enrollment, be subject to these promotion requirements. Grades from schools attended during the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade years will be considered for promotion requirements. Students enrolled for less than 20 days will have their records evaluated on an individual basis.
