Technology Information

HMS Technology and Computer Lab

At Hilmar Middle School, we are committed to providing a learning environment that balances modern technology with proven educational practices. To better support our students’ academic focus and overall well-being, we are updating our technology policy for the 2026–2027 school year.
Starting this year, HMS will no longer check out individual Chromebooks for students to take home full-time. Instead, we are transitioning to classroom-based Chrome Carts to create a more structured and intentional learning environment.

WHAT IS CHANGING?
Classroom Access: Chromebooks will be readily available in every classroom for students to use during the school day.
Assigned Devices: To ensure accountability and proper care, each student will be assigned a specific Chromebook to use while in class.
Purposeful Integration: Technology will remain a key part of instruction for essential tools like Canvas, digital assessments, and targeted activities. However, all digital assignments will be completed during class time.
Homework Adjustments: Take-home homework will no longer require a Chromebook. If a student needs extra time to complete a digital assignment, they will have the opportunity to check out a device from the Tech Lab.

WHY WE ARE MAKING THE SHIFT
Hilmar Middle School is closely following the growing body of research regarding the impact of excessive screen time on adolescent development. By moving toward more pencil-and-paper learning, our goal is to encourage deeper focus, minimize digital distractions, and strengthen foundational reading and writing skills.

HOME ACCESS & SUPPORT
We want to ensure every student has the tools they need to succeed. If an assignment requires digital completion beyond class hours, students may check out a Chromebook from the Tech Lab upon request from their teacher.
We believe this balanced approach will foster a more engaged, hands-on learning environment for our students. Thank you for your continued partnership and support as we work together to provide the best possible education for your children.
